Southend Pier Head, Southend-on-Sea, Essex

A new cultural centre for Southend situated at the tip of the town's 1.3 mile long pier. The building is shaped by its unique maritime environment; the triangular shape of the walls and hyperbolic paraboloid roof provide excellent resistance to high wind loads. The floor is raised 1.5m above the surrounding pier deck to keep it clear of storm surges. The space under the floor is used for steel trusses that evenly spread the 170 tonne weight of the building over the underlying Victorian cast iron piles. The building was constructed in nearly Tilbury Docks before being transported by barge to the site and lifted in one piece onto the pier using a floating shear leg crane.

Completed 2012.
