After seven years of construction, the new satellite testing facility has opened its doors in Oxfordshire. Price & Myers has been working with IBI, along with long-standing clients, the Science and Technology Facilities Council, and Mace to design the facility.
The National Satellite Test Facility in Harwell is the first of its kind in the UK. The five-storey building includes acoustically isolated and electromagnetically sealed rooms, and a 200-tonne thermal vacuum chamber to replicate conditions in space. This allows companies to test satellites before they are launched.
Dr Sarah Beardsley, Director of RAL Space, noted in a recently published BBC article, that this facility is ‘the beating heart of the UK space sector’.
