Coin Street Housing, London | Haworth Tompkins Architects

Coin Street Community Builders have established an enviable record for commissioning high-quality housing. Now, this new high density project, the result of a limited competition, looks set to continue the tradition. Thirty two houses and 27 flats and maisonettes are ranged round three sides of a large, secure landscaped courtyard: the fourth will be closed by the 'Hothouse', a community and training facility. All the houses have street level entrances and private gardens, with balconies to every bedroom. The northen range are three storey, with maisonettes above: those on the other two sides are four storey, with an 'attic' room giving on to a rooftop terrace. The external envelope to the street is a simple deep brick screen: that to the private interior, soft and delicate with timber sunshades and decking. And the car park which lies beneath (and helped finance) the scheme has been punched through to accommodate a large mature tree, an example of the care which has been taken to create an oasis of tranquility in the heart of London.
