Coin Street Neighbourhood Centre, Stamford Street, London | Haworth Tompkins

This is a really good example of a client/architect relationship where the architect has gone to great lengths to understand the needs of the client and translate those into a satisfying design. In this case, the brief was wide ranging - a community cafe, retail, nursery school, offices for Coin Street and meeting rooms for the community, which includes surrounding office users. The result is a rich mix of different functions assembled into a coherent whole, where every detail had been considered down to the choice of furniture and play equipment. The Centre completes a new square in Coin Street where the other three sides are earlier Haworth Tompkins housing. The environmental response employed sensible, passive systems that should be the norm in all new buildings.
