Lord Mayor's Award for Urban Design

New Art Exchange, Nottingham | Hawkins\Brown

The awards are given to outstanding projects in the fields of architecture, planning, landscape and urban design. They must create new exciting, safe and sustainable spaces and buildings.

Judges' comment:
This is a very sophisticated building; the planning is rational and efficient, the spaces are functional and flexible and the materials are restrained and put together well. And yet it is also a very friendly building, with its playful arrangement of windows, its welcoming cafe opening on to the street and its brightly colour-coded staircase. From inside the building, the thoughtfully positioned windows offer a range of views to the world outside, carefully framed like living pictures on the wall. Although uncompromisingly modern and faced in black bricks, the building sits comfortably between its distinguished red brick Victorian neighbours."
