Emmanuel College Library, Cambridge | Kilburn Nightingale Architects

Turning a 1970s concrete frame archive store into a library that is suited to exploring the relationships between books, fellow students, and with the act of reading itself, while improving the environmental performance of the building, was no easy task. A diverse range of spaces for reading and studying has been created in what is now an extension to the existing Edwardian library. The lightweight timber structure housing individual reading carrels also houses lighting and trickle ventilation.
