Derwent Stepping Stones, Derby

A new-build community crèche and training facility in central Derby. The design was guided by sustainability principles including natural ventilation and lighting and high insulation in the building envelope along with material selection. The structure is a steel frame with precast concrete plank floors enabling flexible internal space-planning. The main building is three storeys with a partial roof terrace. This is linked at each floor to a four-storey tower with internal bridge decks enclosed with a glazed façade. The external walls are lined with timber ‘I’ studs and clad in a range of materials.

Completed 2005.
