Douai Abbey Library, Douai Abbey, Berkshire

New library and archive store for religious manuscripts. Both the monks and the public will have access to the store. The building must maintain a constant temperature to protect the delicate documents. The structure uses heavy blockwork walls and a high quality exposed precast concrete roof slab to create a large amount of exposed thermal mass. This combined with carefully controlled lighting ventilation and ground source cooling leads to a controlled environment that is very efficient and sustainable. The reading room has a lighter and more airy feel with more glazing and exposed timber structure.

Completed 2010.
