JSA/China Shipping, Felixstowe

The new HQ for China Shipping UK and Johnson Stevens Agency in Felixstowe, is a three storey L-shaped building comprising two wings of offices linked by a full height curved atrium on the external corner. The directors offices and boardroom are in a single story drum above the atrium with views over the nearby docks. The front facades are fully glazed, with a western red cedar brise soleil, consisting of 10m high mast-like tapered columns with horizontal fins in between. The rear elevations are clad in pre-patinated copper. Roof top louvre screens conceal extensive plant areas on the roofs of the two wings.
To minimise flood risk to the low lying site fill was used to raise the ground floor slab level, which has a 1.2m high perimeter watertight concrete upstand within the external wall. A temporary flood barrier can be quickly installed around the entrances to complete the upstand before high risk events.

Completed 2007.
