Loughborough Design School, Loughborough

New three-storey faculty building providing a new home for various design disciplines within the East Park campus at Loughborough University. The multi-disciplinary Design Centre provides state of the art facilities allowing a broad spectrum of the design disciplines to collaborate within an open and transparent environment, with workshops, laboratories, studios, learning and lecture space available for teaching and research. The building also includes a gallery and café space at ground floor level that is accessible to the public. The design incorporates a reinforced concrete frame, supported on a piled foundation, which is largely exposed and architecturally expressed both internally and externally. The main roof comprises insitu concrete ‘saw-tooth’ North lights which appear to wrap down the south elevation of the building forming a series of shell like structures over the main workshop areas and clad in black zinc. Other elevations are mainly glazed with exposed concrete elements. The external concrete elements are thermally broken from the main structural frame in order to prevent cold bridging. The building has been rated BREEAM Excellent.
