Montpelier Community Nursery, London

A simple and structurally flexible design for a community maintained nursery building in the form of a pavilion. The indoor space opens on to a part-sheltered play area with a park beyond. Natural light flows in through strip window rooflights, which also provide natural ventilation. The cross-laminated timber roof structure further adds to the bright effect of the ceiling. A large main room with a wall of supporting spaces leaves ample structural flexibility for modifications or varied use of space. There is seamless transition between indoors and outdoors via openable walls.
