Siobhan Davies Dance School, London

Refurbishment of an existing 1898 school building to accommodate new dance studios and resources for independent dance companies. The building was originally in two parts with an inter-connecting stairwell. This has been removed to segregate the two wings, creating a new large and well lit central double-height foyer that acts as a social hub for the building. The unusual roof form is essentially five curved, asymmetrical ‘ribbon’ arches with repeat profiles at varying heights, allowing 5m clear headroom for the dancers in the studio below. The building encompasses offices, meeting rooms, a kitchen and restaurant, and comfortable seating areas as well as the necessary treatment, changing, rehearsal and showering facilities for the dancers.

Completed 2006.
