Snape Maltings, Aldeburgh, Suffolk

The Grade II* listed Maltings at Snape were originally converted into a concert hall by Arup Associates in 1967. It was always envisaged that the hall would be used for opera but the facilities provided were fairly limited. The present refurbishment includes the demolition and rebuilding of the "turning bays" of the old maltings to provide more space, and a new recording studio and office accommodation. The roof of the restaurant was removed and raised by 1.5 metres, giving enough space to introduce a new mezzanine floor and a new clerestory window running the full length of the building.

Completed 1999.
