The Oaklands Centre, Woodley, Berkshire

New community building for Woodley Town Council built on a flat green field site within the grounds of their old community centre. The building houses function rooms, public halls, council offices and a theare. The building has been constructed using a two-span steel portal frame supported on traditional pad foundations. The external finish to the building is timber weatherboarding secured to a timber frame. The building a sheet zinc roof fixed to a structural metal deck. The steeply pitched roofs have a full length clerestories at the apex to ventilate the plant rooms concealed within the roof space. The theatre is double height with 'fairfaced' blockwork and exposed steelwork. There is also a circular function room to one side of the building and an external planting feature to two sides of the main building.
