The Ritblat Building, Hilden Grange Preparatory School, Kent

A new three-storey extension to the preparatory school at Hilden Grange in Tonbridge. Two wings were added at the back of the existing school, set into a north facing sloping site. The building features sustainably sourced natural materials in keeping with the surroundings, including a Cross Laminated Timber frame, larch boarding and cedar-clad walling. A 'green roof' area on the east wing extension, softens the building into its setting using native planting. Work was on a very tight site and the school had to remain open throughout the construction, so it was particularly important to limit noise and disruption and to keep children and staff safely separate from site activity. External works included play areas and a multi-use games pitch.

Completed 2012.
