Whitechapel West Sports Centre, London

A new build multi-use sports centre for the London Borough of Tower Hamlets built over a 0.5 hectare inner city old and derelict site which had been extensively used for landfill. The substructure was designed to cope with difficult ground conditions as well as with carbon dioxide emissions. Each of the buildings have loadbearing masonry above first floor level, and steel framed roofs. The main sports hall has a steel frame and an east light roof. Large steel primary trusses and multiple 3 dimensional kite shaped secondary trusses create this innovative roof.

Completed 1997.
