Astley Castle, Warwickshire

Astley Castle is a Grade II* listed ruin on a site which is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. In 2007 The Landmark Trust held a competition to create an outstanding modern Landmark within the ruins of what remained, which was won by Witherford Watson Mann Architects with Price & Myers with a proposal that integrated much of the existing structure rather than sitting alongside it. We were appointed to provide both structural and civil consultancy services. Key features of the design were stabilising the existing rubble walls with anchors, rebuilding retained edges with contemporary brick diaphragm walls in lime mortar, the use of high quality precast concrete, carefully detailed exposed roof timbers, and a hanging timber staircase.

Completed 2012.
