Bishop Edward King Chapel, Oxfordshire

A RIBA competition winning design for the new Bishop Edward King Chapel at Ripon College in Oxfordshire. The deceptively delicate elliptical shape provides two focal points, on the altar and lectern. The ribbed ceiling structure supports the roof and consists of slender glulam timber beams and columns. Steel connections at the junctions are hidden within the timber thickness. Much of the internal floor and benches are constructed of fair faced concrete. The exterior is clad in Ashlar stone. The new chapel serves two interconnected communities: the residential and non-residential college community; and the Sisters of a small religious community, resident on campus.

Completed 2013.
