Chichester Festival Theatre, West Sussex

Alterations and new back of house facilities for this Grade II* listed iconic brutalist style theatre, originally designed by Powell and Moya and opened in 1962. We were appointed to provide both sustainability and structural consultancy services. Price & Myers Sustainability have been working as BREEAM assessors for the project, and have worked closely with the design team to develop a sustainable design and construction strategy in order to achieve a 'Very Good' rating. Such a bespoke multi-functional building presents a challenge in balancing different needs. Extra constraints presented themselves in terms of energy reduction, from scenery lifts to acoustic requirements. Natural ventilation strategies have been employed where possible, balanced with mechanical ventilation for spaces where daylight is designed out and acoustics take precedent. In addition, the thermal comfort of visitors and staff is maximised.
