Royal College of Engineering, Hyderabad, India

Design objectives were to produce a daylit, naturally ventilated building with a high-quality learning environment. The classroom depths were limited to 7m to allow daylight penetration as well as providing good natural cross-ventilation. The innovative design principle behind the Royal College building was to place solar chimneys along the roof, which encourages heat to build up along the roof and allowing ventilation to be driven through the building in a controllable manner, even during low winds. The classrooms are designed to utilise the pressure differential surrounding the building. Fresh air will enter through facades through evaporative cooling pads under positive pressure. The solar chimneys positioned on the roof are under negative pressure for all wind directions. This pressure difference ensures an airflow from the classrooms to the outside. Warm air will naturally rise through the building and out through the solar chimney. Detailed daylight and solar analysis was carried out to ensure good daylight distribution as well as avoiding solar gains.
