The winner of the National Railway Museum design competition, organised by Malcolm Reading Consultants on behalf of the Science Museum Group, has been revealed and we are delighted to announce that we will be working with Feilden Fowles and Max Fordham on the design of the new Central Hall.
The £16.5m scheme will transform the museum’s entrance and will provide a 4,500 sqm gallery and gateway structure between the Great Hall and Station Hall exhibition space.
The design features a two-storey rotunda, clad with recycled patinated copper and lit with high clerestory glazing. It was inspired by the site’s former uses and expresses the team’s commitment to lower the embodied carbon by favouring a timber frame structure.
