Covent Garden Apartment
London

Tucked into the rooftops of Covent Garden, this project involved the comprehensive refurbishment of the top two floors of a 19th Century Grade II listed merchant’s house, including the addition of a new rooftop pavilion. Internally, the existing floors were upgraded and strengthened, and the lower level reworked to include bedrooms and an entrance lobby, lined in walnut joinery.

Sitting lightly on the existing stock brick annexe at the rear of the building, the new roof pavilion is formed entirely in 25mm solid-plate sanded aluminium. We worked closely with Format Engineers and Littlehampton Welding to develop a solution that allowed for the visual purity of the pavilion’s form, while enabling it to be craned into position over the building.

Throughout, careful attention to materiality and detail ties the project together. Our structural approach was guided by a desire to support this level of craft without compromise: invisible where needed, expressive where appropriate.
