Greenwich Park Revealed
London

Greenwich Park Revealed is a landscape-led restoration of London’s oldest enclosed Royal Park, part of a long-term plan by The Royal Parks to protect and share its 590-year heritage. The project enhances public spaces and visitor facilities while supporting learning, leisure, and volunteering for more than five million annual visitors.

Appointed by The Royal Parks, Price & Myers delivered the civil and structural engineering design for RIBA Stages 4 and 5. We focused on three key areas: the Grand Ascent, the Parterre Banks, and the Wolfe Statue and Kiosk Building.

Engineering a sensitive restoration
The Grand Ascent terraces, first formed in 1661, were carefully re-constructed using a detailed 3D ground model we developed for the new step profiles. From this detailed cut-and-fill volumes and construction sequences were developed. We worked closely with Historic England, soil specialists and the Park’s archaeology team to preserve the park’s heritage and ecology. New drainage biodegradable ground reinforcement was initially constructed to provide a robust base for the new landforms. The steps were then laid in layers of recycled granular fill material ensuring the restored terraces were robust and sustainable.

At the Parterre Banks, subtle regrading of the slopes was carried out with equal care around established trees, restoring the land to its original vision.

Enhancing the visitor experience
Around the Wolfe Statue, new viewing terraces, a catering kiosk, and public seating areas have improved access and views. A sustainable drainage system with permeable paving, tree pits, and soakaways manages surface water naturally and reduces strain on the park’s infrastructure. Historic paving was carefully lifted and re-laid on special bedding mortar, saving cost and material.

Working with The Royal Parks
This project builds on our long collaboration with The Royal Parks across London’s historic landscapes, including St James’s, Regent’s, Richmond, Hyde, and Kensington Gardens. We have been appointed on three successive Royal Parks frameworks.
