Alterations and extension to the library at St John's College, Oxford. The existing library is housed within the 1636 Grade I listed Canterbury Quadrangle, one of the most important Baroque buildings in Britain.
The first phase was an Enabling Works project converting existing spaces to provide new access. Phase 2 created a new linked Study Centre within the President's Garden including basement archive spaces. Enclosed against the Sprott Wall, a listed rubble stone wall dating from 1613, the Study Centre provides archive and plant spaces at basement level along with three levels of reader spaces, social areas and seminar rooms.
The new building has been designed to be zero carbon and includes ground source boreholes and photovoltaic panels. Artist Susannah Heron has designed a sculpture carved into the stonework of the external walls. The final Phase involves the careful repair and refurbishment of the Laudian Library and the Old Library along with the re-creation of several Fellows' sets in the ground floor.
Phase I completed 2015, Phase II completed 2019, Phase III completed 2023.
