The Strange House
London

Tucked into a backlands site and surrounded by existing brick walls, this house in Deptford is a wonderful example of how much can be achieved on a very small, restricted site (75 sq m) and on a modest budget.

The house superstructure is an engineered timber frame by Eurban. The frame was lifted into place within a week and was sufficiently lightweight that a new concrete raft could be poured on top of the existing slab on site, saving the time and cost of site excavation.

The doors, windows, linings, and much of the furniture is made from FSC (Forest Stewardship Council)-certified tropical hardwood fabricated in a Nicaraguan factory from trees felled by Hurricane Felix, all of which arrived on site in a single container.

Completed 2009.
