Gold Hill Baptist Church
London

Opened in 2021, the Gold Hill Baptist Church Hub acts as expanded facilities for the church as well as a focal point for the local community.

The project involved the demolition of a 1960s building that was unfit for purpose. The site was also once home to an automotive garage, and preparation for the new building required the removal of several buried tanks and remediation of the adjacent ground.

A large two storey building replaces the existing building, providing a large double-height and flexible auditorium space at ground floor level with Baptist pool, and office, community and activity spaces at the upper levels. An underground space at the rear of building provides plant and toilet space, with car parking above. A roof terrace serves as an additional gathering place in fine weather, with views out over the village.

The new structure includes large steel moment frames to provide a column free ground floor space, with the frames articulated in the building with vaulted ceiling soffits. Deflection and vibration of the large frames drove the structural design and allow simultaneous use of the spaces.
