Manor Lodge School
Hertfordshire

The refurbishment and extension of Manor Lodge School transforms the existing reception years classrooms into an inspiring learning environment. Designed with IID Architects, the scheme includes a generous inside play space and outdoor area, forming a connection between indoor and outdoor learning.

Sustainability through structural design is at the heart of this project. Existing foundations were retained and beam-and-block flooring from a demolished conservatory were repurposed, significantly reducing the environmental impact of construction. The timber cantilevered curved roof is supported by a steel frame and extends beyond the building footprint to accommodate a new tree that grows through a bespoke opening. Inside, exposed flitch beams are made from UK sourced softwood. Price & Myers’ civil engineering teamed designed permeable surfacing in the new outdoor play area, strategically placing an attenuation tank in order to reduce pressure on the existing drainage network.

Construction had to be carefully managed due to poor existing ground conditions and to ensure the preservation of surrounding trees, and the school remained open and operational during construction works.
