Godolphin & Latymer School
Hammersmith

A new three-storey building at Godolphin & Latymer School has transformed the site of the former library and dining facilities, replacing a series of 20th-century additions with a more efficient and unified design. The original cloister - part of the school’s Victorian-era construction - was retained for its historic and visual value, while the surrounding structures were removed.

The new building has an in-situ reinforced concrete frame at ground and first floor level. This forms a transfer slab that supports a glulam and cross-laminated timber (CLT) structure above, with the exposed concrete soffit forming the ceiling to the new dining space.

The timber frame wraps around a central courtyard and links three surrounding buildings with a full-height glazed façade. A new central staircase resolves the different floor levels across the site, allowing redundant stairwells in adjacent buildings to be removed and the space reclaimed.

We also carried out the structural work to the adjacent Goodison Building, originally designed with Price & Myers in the late 1990s. The new work includes structural alterations to create a top-floor extension enclosing a former terrace, as well as reconfigured sixth form social spaces. As part of the updated drainage strategy, a large surface water attenuation tank is now concealed beneath the new courtyard.
